henrietta the bike, the curvature of the earth, and one more sleep

first off: i got a new bike. her name is henrietta. she looks like so: http://www.fujibikes.com/2007/bikes.asp?id=323 She makes me go real fast. beat that other bike. not that i didn't like my other bike, i just like henrietta better. now i just need the weather to cooperate more so that i can ride to work more.
secondly: we went to saskatoon and had a blast! we did not see the curvature of the earth because you can't. max visability is actually 24km. it was still fun though. we went to moosejaw for the day and visited both of the local attractions: the moosejaw tunnels and the casino. the tunnels are similar to storyeum, but are actually successful. there were 2 tunnels, one told the story of the chinese workers who were not treated nicely by the whites, and how they lived in these tunnels and only went out for fresh air at 3 in the morning because then all the white folks would be asleep. the second tunnel was about a bootlegging operation during prohibition. apparently al capone had a canadian division. at the casino, we won $60. not bad. it paid for the tunnels :)
and tomorrow is the big day! my big sis and nephew make a trans-atlantic flight. they better be ready for a fun filled summer. there's going to be lots of spoiling for both of them!
yay!

eek...it's been a while.

i didn't quite realize how long though. i've just been working lots and haven't had much time. plus, i'll admit i got myself facebooking. i've taken a good half step back though. but it's still really interesting to see just how small the world can be sometimes.
i've been biking to work lots recently which feels really good. and besides, this week is bike to work week and on june 6th it's clean air day. that means no single occupancy vehicles! biking home is still a grind, but every days seems to get a little bit easier.
this past weekend, we were up in kelowna visiting good friends of mine. they've lived there for about a year now, and ever since they moved there, i'd promise i'd go and visit them. so a year later, that finally happened. it was a very relaxing weekend and it was really good to see them. we did a bit of hiking and walking, and learning all about kelowna and especially the wicked fire of 2003 that just went crazy. and of course, you can't really go to the okanagon without doing some wine tours. we did 3 in total. i did a bit of sampling, but they were all quite good and all very different too.
last night i had a reunion of sorts with some folks that i worked with about 5 years ago. we see each other every so often, but not nearly enough. we also got a chance to go and visit our old place of work which was very interesting to see. a whole lot of renovations have taken place and it looks quite different. in then end though, i think we all decided it was waay better when we were there. times change though.
in a couple of weeks it's off to the wonderful praries, so unless something super duper exciting happens between now and then, the next post will be later rather than sooner.
peace out

happy earth day!!!

in honour of it being earth day...i drove to work! yay me. i was going to bike but it was raining pretty hard this morning. and i did bike to work yesterday. every little bit counts.
i figured out my footprint too. if you want to, go to http://www.myfootprint.org/
my end result: if everyone lived like me, we would need 5.1 planets. yikes! my total footprint is 9.1, and the average for canada is 8.8. i'm a touch above. but there are lots of little things one can do to help. saying no to plastic bags, or biking a to work a couple times a week is always a start.
i just wish vancouver didn't have so many damn hills, then i'd bike more often!

happy easter!!!

hope everyone didn't eat too many of those yummy mini eggs. i know i did though. they are irresistible. i went for a bit of a bike ride with dave. it was nice to get out and stretch those legs. and in the process got my very first skeeter bite of the season. pesky little buggers.
i have yet to attempt a ride to work though. ask me though, i'm full of excuses. the biggest being the uphill battle (times three) home. i'll do it eventually though.
take it easy where ever you are!

work

why is it that the customer is always right? sometimes they aren't, and in fact they are just plain arseholes.
it sucks as well when your day is going fine, and then you have one idiot who can sour things. oh well.
i brought piggy home. if you want to see it, you'll have to make a donation. :) actually, i'll take a picture and post it.
and i'm addicted to facebook now too. yikes!

a day early!

tomorrow is the first day of spring, and today is the start of hayfever for me. what can i do, but grin and bear it. the city does look really pretty though with all the cherry trees in bloom. such pretty pink.
on the weekend a group of us went to dicks on dicks for a st. patricks day brewhahahahah! ashley macisaac was the big ticket. pretty good live. and he didn't wear a kilt so we didn't have to worry about getting flashed.
i wanted to go for a bike ride today, but a little maintenance is needed.
welcome spring!

avi course

so i got to partake in an avalanche course this past week. the weather was absolutley gorgeous, and i'm pretty sure that i made some people pretty darn jealous.
we spent the better part of 2 days up on mount seymour, with the first half of the second day having poor visability. other than that it was sun all the way.
it was just a level 1 avi course, so it covered all the important basics... how to use beacons, how to conduct a search and rescue, digging snow pits, and learning that dogs are actually smarter than humans. well, when it comes to rescuses at least. those noses they've got are pretty darn good! our group of 7 was out done by a dog! yay us!
it was lots of fun, and very useful as well. the next day it was just back to work.
